Spud Webb entered the NBA in 1985, coming from an impressive path of perseverance. Webb was never a big-time basketball prospect growing up and was always doubted because of his height despite consistently proving the critics wrong. Webb’s rookie season with the Atlanta Hawks in 1985-86 saw him finish the season as one of the NBA’s top rookies, averaging 7.8 points per game, 4.3 assists per game, and 1 steal per game. Additionally, Webb took the world by storm as he won the 1986 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, leaving fans in awe as he completed multiple impressive dunks at just five and a half feet tall. Webb’s fame quickly grew after this historic dunk contest championship and Webb became a legend as he seemingly did the impossible.
