Wayne Gretzky began the 1988-89 NHL season as a member of the Los Angeles Kings after leaving the only professional hockey team he had known. While one fan base was disappointed with his departure, the ‘Great One’ was capturing a new avid fan base in southern California. Gretzky continued his assault on goaltenders by peppering them with shots on net and assisting his teammates as they did the same. His leadership and mastery of the game in turn improved the overall team performance.
