LeBron James will go down as the best player in Cleveland Cavaliers history, and the franchise has had its share of impact players over the decades. But one player who had an incredible emotional connection with Cavs fans was Zydrunas Ilgauskas. He played 12 of his 13 NBA seasons in Cleveland, placing his name atop or near the top of most statistical categories, including being the all-time leader in games played (771). His popularity was universal among Cleveland fans, who honored him with a standing ovation when he returned to the city as a member of the Miami Heat in his final season in 2010-11. When he arrived in the NBA via his native Lithuania, Zydrunas Ilgauskas quickly joined a growing group of big men who could step away from the basket and still consistently knock down shots. The 7-foot-3 center was still comfortable in the paint, but he did a lot of his damage as a mid-range jump shooter. The extra benefit of his ability to pop out that far was that he regularly brought his man out with him, freeing up the inside from potential blocked shots. He had a tremendous effect on the NBA, particularly in Cleveland. The two-time All-Star overcame a litany of injuries to forge a career that saw him score more than 10,000 points, haul in more than 6,000 rebounds and block more than 1,300 shots. Coming out of Lithuania as a 21-year-old center, Zydrunas Ilgauskas was drafted 20th overall in the 1996 NBA Draft. A year later, he made his debut in Cleveland and scored 16 points with 16 rebounds while also blocking two shots against the Rockets. He ended that season with placement on the All-Rookie First Team. Over the course of the next 12 NBA seasons, Big Z would develop into one of the league’s top big men. While he began his career with a full head of hair, as seen in the middle image of this collage, he eventually went to the shaved head look as his game grew at the same rate as his popularity in Cleveland. Perhaps none were more talented from head to toe than San Antonio Spurs center Tim Duncan. Coupling that with a relentless work ethic is what made Zydrunas Ilgauskas one of the best players in Cleveland Cavaliers history. He played the game among the trees, annually ranking among the league leaders in rebounding and blocked shots. On 11/1/02, het set a career high with 22 rebounds and added 17 points in a game against the Suns. A little more than three years later, he matched a career high with seven blocked shots in a 100-91 win over the Bulls (2/23/05). He blocked seven shots in a game three times in his career. With a wide range of moves in and out of the paint, coupled with a dominating ability to finish around the rim, Zydrunas Ilgauskas was a consistent force in the middle for 13 NBA seasons, 12 of them in Cleveland. The two-time All-Star began his career with placement on the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 1998 and ended it with his jersey being retired three years following his final season in 2010-11. Offensively, he shot 48 percent from the field in his career, adding an impressive 78 percent from the charity stripe. He also finished in the top 10 in offensive rebounds six times, including leading the league in 2004-05. On the defensive end, he sits 46th on the all-time blocked shots list with 1,327.
