On December 18, 1989 Sports Illustrated released their final issue of the year. The cover featured NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana, NBA Hall of Fame point guard Magic Johnson, and NHL Hall of Fame center Wayne Gretzky. The title of the cover was “They Dominated the ’80s” a tribute to these three champions. During the decade in which they dominated, these men won a combined 40% of the championships in their respective sport. Montana won the 1982, 1985, and 1989 Super Bowls (he also won in 1990). Magic won the 1980, 1982, 1985, 1987, and 1988 NBA Championships. The “Great One” Wayne Gretzky won the 1984, 1985, 1987, and 1988 Stanley Cup Championships. 1985 was a special year for them as each one won their respective championship. Before Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan were household names winning NBA MVP’s and NBA champions, they were college All American’s who each won the NCAA National Champion. Magic Johnson was a two year star at Michigan State University who helped them win the 1979 National Championship. Magic was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 1979 NCAA Final Four. He then declared for the 1979 NBA Draft where he became the number one overall selection of the LA Lakers. Michael Jordan on the other hand was a three star at the University of North Carolina. As a freshman in 1982, he was the ACC Freshman of the Year and helped his team win the 1982 NCAA National Championship. The two time all American was named ACC Player of the Year in 1984. After his junior year season, Michael declared for the 1984 NBA Draft where he was the third overall selection of the Chicago Bulls. While Magic and Michael attended college at different times, could you imagine if they had faced off in a Big Ten vs ACC matchup?
