From his first shift in Quebec, Joe Sakic represented himself not as an athlete who wanted to be the best in the league, but instead he acted as if he wanted to be a team captain. He was a rare skater who consistently finished around the 100-point mark yet was as unselfish a player as ever skated in the NHL. He was the consummate pro, earning co-captain duties to begin just his third season in Quebec before being named full-time captain two seasons later. When he was the Nordiques’ sole captain, the team won 47 games and notched 104 points, both franchise highs. Despite playing just seven of his 20 NHL seasons in Quebec, he ranks fourth on the team’s career goals and points list. His professional “Journey” took him and the organization to Colorado for the 1995-96 season as he finished his career with 1,641 career points and two Stanley Cup championships. It’s rare when an athlete is universally respected by nearly everyone involved in the game. Joe Sakic was one of those rare gems. There were many reasons why Sakic was so respected around the NHL. He carried himself with class and professionalism. He respected the opponent and the game. He didn’t trash talk. He led by example on and off the ice. He served as a mentor to younger teammates just coming into the league. He wanted to win and win the right way. And one of the top reasons was his singular focus on the ice. Like in this image of Sakic in a Colorado Avalanche jersey, he was always focused on the next play or shift to see what he could do to help his team win. It didn’t take long into Joe Sakic’s NHL career to realize he would someday have a spot in the Hockey Hall of Fame. He contributed in so many ways to the Nordiques’ nightly effort, doing whatever was asked of him while performing his natural leadership duties. In just his second season (1989-90), he notched his first 100-point effort. He began the season with a hat trick in the third game and finished the season with at least one goal in the final six games. He again surpassed the 100-point threshold the next season as he recorded 11 multiple-goal games and his first career five-point game (10/10/90). He scored 94 points the following season (in only 69 games) and then returned to his triple digit ways in ’92-93. That season, he skated in his fourth consecutive All-Star Game for the Wales Conference. This 3-D Shadow Box is truly a unique piece. After getting selected 15th in the first round of the 1987 NHL Entry Draft, Joe Sakic played one more season in the Western Hockey League before making his NHL debut in 1988. His talent was on display form the get-go as he scored his first career goal in his second career game. He notched a two-goal game the next night and scored his first hat trick in just his eighth career game. He went on to score 23 goals as a rookie and went on to post a pair of 48-goal seasons in a Nordiques sweater before the franchise relocated to Denver following the 1994-95 season. With a deadly accurate slap shot, he scored 234 goals in 508 games in Quebec and skated in five All-Star Games as a young Nordiques center.
