The Edmonton Oilers were honored by the Hockey Hall of Fame for their success in the 1980s by being granted dynasty status. Key players from Wayne Gretzky on offense, to Paul Coffey on defense to Grant Fuhr in the net made this team incredible. The Oilers won five Stanley Cups during this decade. Jari Kurri was the first Finnish player to ever be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Kurri was inducted in 2001 after recording 601 goals, 797 assists and 1,398 points. Of the 601 career goals, 106 of them came during the postseason. When Kurri retired he was the highest-scoring European-born player in NHL® history. Kurri played in 17 NHL® seasons from 1980 to 1998 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Jari Kurri became only the eighth player in NHL history to reach 600 goals in December of 1997. The Edmonton Oilers retired the number 17 in honor of Kurri on Oct. 6, 2001. Kurri won five Stanley Cup championships while playing for the Oilers. Kurri also played on the international level for Finland and helped bring home a bronze medal from the 1998 Winter Olympics. Jari Kurri is considered an icon for fans in Finland and throughout the hockey world due to his consistent performance throughout a career that featured five Stanley Cup® championships. When he unexpectedly arrived in Edmonton following the 1980 NHL® Draft, Kurri was a shy young player who spoke very little English. Kurri’s play steadily improved, and in the 1982-83 season he recorded a 100-point season while reaching 50 goals as well. Kurri went on to win five Stanley Cups® in 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988 and 1990 as a member of the Oilers®. Kurri has signed and inscribed “5x SC Champ” on the puck in black paint pen.
